I've been following this thread a bit with some interest, because it's starting to be pretty apparent that the developers (of racing games) gripes I was hearing at last year's E3 show are starting to materialize. UBISoft's head producer for the console version of their F1 games was the first one at the show that brought up the issue about how difficult it was to get what they wanted out of the PS2; and immediately pointed out the available SDK's and some hardware specs (he constantly mentioned video memory limitations) as the main culprits. But he didn't seem to be very hopeful for any improvement for the future, especially in the area of SDK's.
Fast forward to this week. I was talking to one of the developers at West Racing, who are currently working on a game (World Sports Cars) that is scheduled to be released simultaneously on the PC and PS2 platforms. When asking him about the progress of development on both versions, he immediately pointed out that the porting team has been going through a complete nightmare to get the PS2 version even remotely near the PC version. At this point, he's on the verge of giving up any hope on the PS2 altogether. Again, he said that it's the SDK's that are just killing his project (and a partial cause for any delays as Empire Interactive is asking for a simultaneous release).
So based on a pretty much unanimous opinion from the development teams I've been getting feedback from. The PS2 doesn't look as if it has a very bright future in the area of racing games/sims. Bizarre Creations has already decided to pass over the PS2 and work on the X-Box instead; which I thought was very surprising, considering their past history with the PSX. Whereas Melbourne House looks as if they are already apologizing for what they will be releasing for the PS2 in the upcoming months.

Maybe Polyphony Digital will show them all how it's done with their GT3 project? Otherwise I don't see any reason at all to purchase a PS2 if racing games are one of your primary interests.
